Fortwilliam Fanfare

November 2004

The annual pre-Christmas concert series by this society is always an enjoyable event and this year is no exception. Musical director Billy Cairns and choreographer Angela Harding showcase the company's talents in an eclectic evening of musical delights.

Young and old join forces as the mature chorus teams up with a bevy of young and energetic dancers for a programme boasting everything from Disney, Gershwin and Christmas medleys to a gentle Irish song section and an ambitious attempt to stage a tribute to Riverdance.

While the ladies supply the glamour for the evening, it is the men who provide the humour, especially during Michael Blair's Ladies' Day and Drew Reid's Mr Cellophane.

The real highlight of this concert is the vocal quality of the individual singers. At last night's opening performance, the choral work may not have reached its full potential, but young Victoria Davis was impressive, as were Joyce Greenaway with Embraceable You and the excellent Ceara Grehan with How Many Tears.

However, the ensemble did have its moments and Lady's Maid from Titanic was definitely one of them.
