Character Synopsis

All of the characters have mid-American accents which have an educated feel to them with the exception of Katie the maid

Esther Smith female mezzo Leading Role
A lively and attractive young lady who is the second eldest daughter and is in love with the boy next door, John Truett.

John Truitt male tenor
Boy next door and the one whom Esther has set her sights on.

Mr. Alonso Smith male baritone
A Lawyer and domineering father of the Smith family, he feels his word is final in most matters.

Mrs. Anna Smith female soprano
Charming wife of Alonso and mother of the Smith family. Strong lady who relishes in her family and keeps the peace between the various members of the household.

Lon Smith male tenor
Lon is the only son of the Smith family a handsome Princeton graduate

Rose Smith female soprano
Beautiful daughter of the family. Sees herself as being very sophisticated. Is in love with Warren Sheffield but plays hard to get. Very affected and tries to impress with her knowledge of French.

Agnes Smith female
Tomboyish sister of the family second youngest member and a self opinionated feisty young lady who is a perfect foil for Tootie.

Tootie Smith female
Bright youngest sister of the family. She is a precocious ‘know it all’. This is a demanding role and calls for good character acting as she supplies a lot of the humour.

Grandpa Prophater male
A Civil war veteran this is a lively character part. This slightly eccentric old man spends the show in various hats depending on his mood a much loved grandfather.

Katie female mezzo
The Smith’s cook and housekeeper. She is no servile member of staff but a strong Irish woman who is not afraid to speak her mind

Warren Sheffield male baritone
The suitor of Rose an eligible bachelor from a very well to do family

Lucille Ballard female
Charming and sophisticated and the love interest of Lon
